Evolution, Entropy, & Information

v1.4.2 / TOC (2 chapters) / 01 oct 13 / greg goebel / public domain

* Opponents of modern evolutionary theory (MET) -- creationists -- have used a wide range of tactics in their assaults on MET. One of the more popular has been to claim the laws of thermodynamics make evolution impossible. They have made little progress in this exercise due to their fundamental misconceptions of both MET and thermodynamics, and in implied recognition of this failure they have turned to equivalent arguments against MET based on a branch of mathematics known as "information theory".

Criticisms of MET using thermodynamics and information theory are, by intent, obscure and confusing, but it's not too hard to show there's nothing to them. This document provides an informal survey of thermodynamics, information theory, and their relevance (or more correctly lack thereof) to MET to set the facts straight.
