* The top row is all later (early 1970s) Carter Brown material, from left to right:
The late-period Carter Brown mystery paperback covers are quite a bit sleazier than the early ones, leaving a lot less to the imagination. The covers of both GIRL IN A SHROUD and THE PASSIONATE PAGAN were actually repaints of early 1960s paperback covers that looked much the same, except for layout and some difference in small details. In the mid-1970s, after this series of Carter Brown paperbacks, detective novel covers shifted mostly to photographs, apparently because they were cheaper than paintings. It was the end of an era; the photographed covers were often chintzy to begin with and few remain interesting today.
The second row is for Edward S. Aarons novels:
-- as is the third row:
Edward S. Aarons was generally into writing (mostly forgettable) spy paperback novels in the James Bond vein. He died in 1975. All these are McGinnis covers except possibly DEATH IS MY SHADOW. It matches his style but there is no signature or other information that links it to him.
