The Erle Stanley Garner Perry Mason and John D. MacDonald mystery covers were restrained compared to other detective covers, working more for a dramatic effect with some glamour than stimulation. The Richard Prather Shell Scott detective novel covers were not so restrained, and McGinnis seems to have expended more than his usual amount of effort on them. Prather described in detail his overwhelming disgust when his publishers gave up using McGinnis paintings and went to photographs of actors that looked like promos for grade-Z movies.
